PostgreSQL is the successor to Postgres95 and ultimately of POSTGRES. It is an object-relational database, which supports a subset of SQL-92 that grows with every release.

The original POSTGRES was developed at Berkeley as a research project and used its own postquel retrieval language, which is now nearly replaced by SQL.
