The rlpr utility uses tcp/ip to send print jobs to lpd servers anywhere on a network. Unlike lpr, it does not require that the remote printers be explicitly known to the local system (traditionally through /etc/printcap). Therefore, rlpr is considerably more flexible and requires less administration.
This program is essential for a campus setup with an ever-changing population of printers since it allows the user to specify the host/printer from the regular shell prompt or from any program.
