The Samba software suite is a collection of programs that implements the SMB protocol for unix systems, allowing you to serve files and printers to Windows, NT, OS/2 and DOS clients. This protocol is sometimes also referred to as the LanManager or Netbios protocol.
samba (>= 1.9.18alpha1) replaces package sambades since the Samba does not depend anymore on the DES libraries, which have export restrictions) to use encrypted passwords (needed for the latest Windows 95 and NT clients. It is not illegal anymore under the US law to export this software.
